Molecular Electronics and Smart Materials

The Molecular Electronics and Smart Materials Laboratory research group is dedicated to the development of sustainable materials and devices. It focuses in particular on the synthesis of functional nanomaterials and nanostructures (e.g. conducting polymers, MXenes, graphene, magnetic nanoparticles, carbon fibres, cellulose fibres) and their composites (e.g. with polymer matrix or cellulose nanofibres). The development of devices based on these materials is directed towards electronics (shielding of electromagnetic interference, sensors, passive electronic components), energy storage devices (supercapacitors, batteries), catalysis (water purification) and smart biomaterials (tissue engineering, drug carriers).

Research areas

  • Synthesis and optimisation of electrically conductive nanomaterials
  • Micro- and nano-scale characterisation and chemical analysis of materials
  • Materials processing and testing for the design of high performance composites
  • Production of advanced functional composites derived from renewable resources
  • Development and testing of electronic component prototypes
  • Design of systems for diagnostics and data acquisition.
